Waste & Recycling Project Officer Jack, at South Cambridgeshire District Council

The Brief

I worked as part of a team to create a shared waste collection service for South Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridge City Council. The two councils waste services merged in November 2015 to create an efficient bin collection service and work together to meet financial saving targets. To achieve this there was a need to carry out extensive data analysis and optimisation modelling of collection rounds.

Key Responsibilities

My primary responsibility during my opportunity was to support the shared service project with data and modelling work. This involved collection of data, data analysis and carrying out tactical modelling work to ultimately create new collection rounds.

Opportunity Benefits

I found the support of Change Agents UK at the beginning of my job valuable as it helped me in transitioning from universtiy to the world of work. I have had the opportunity to develop my communication and data handling skills which have been invaluable in securing my next job.

The Results

I helped to produce a new set of collection rounds for the shared service which can be delivered using existing resources. This means that residents will receive a reliable and efficient waste collection service. I also had the opportunity to work on a national project with WRAP. The next steps for the project are communicating round changes to residents and then implementation early 2017.
