Environmental Communications Officer Chloe, at Norwich City Council

Did you know that in Europe we consume so much that we need three planets’ worth of natural resources to sustain us within our lifetime? Norwich City Council’s Environmental Strategy team are helping to tackle this issue through the One Planet Norwich (OPN) network.

The network aims to create a range of eco events and experiences in our fine city, to inspire Norwich to make small changes every day to reduce the amount we consume so our one planet can sustain us.

The Partnership

Norwich City Council partnered with Change Agents UK to employ an Environmental Communications Coordinator to engage the local community on eco issues, and encourage positive environmental behaviour change.

A key responsibility of the role was to organise the second One Planet Norwich Festival, Norfolk’s premier sustainable living festival, and to work on the annual Norwich and Norfolk Eco Awards.  I am also organising/have worked on the Norwich Pumpkin Rescue, Slow Food Festival, internal staff events, Norwich’s Big Switch and Save, Norwich Fashion Jam, the Science Festival and Close the Door campaign.

The Results

8,300 visitors attended the One Planet Norwich Festival of which 86% had learned something new about sustainable living!

I brought new collaborations and ideas to the festival, and helped to promote local community groups, businesses and services. The festival gained strong media interest and a range of positive feedback.

An unexpected achievement was receiving a round of applause from city councillors for my work during a Sustainable Development Panel; this was something my Manager had never seen before!

Next steps

I’ve secured a 12 month extension so I will continue to build on the OPN brand and inspire further environmental change across the city.

Chloe has successfully engaged with our citizens and staff on a range of environmental issues as well as coordinating Norfolk’s premier sustainable living festival.
