Marketing and Fundraising Officer at The Green Backyard - Peterborough Graduate Scheme Case Study

Experience on placement by Jennie Orrell

The Brief

The Green Backyard is an urban community growing space in Peterborough. The project works to raise awareness of environmental issues by involving the community in informative, practical demonstrations and workshops. It achieves this by working with different individuals, groups, schools, businesses and other organisations from across Peterborough and beyond.

The two aims of the role were to raise the profile of the newly established charity both with local residents and key partners across the city and to play a key part in the recent fundraising campaign to help secure the land that the site is currently situated on.

The Partnership

The partnership with Change Agents as part of the Peterborough Graduate Scheme came at a perfect time when help was most needed due to the insecurity of the future of the land. This placement provided the first employee for The Green Backyard, assisting with the first steps of establishment of the charity.

The key responsibilities were to assist with the organisation of events, in particular fundraising events and a community consultation, as well as to proactively seek opportunities to market the charity within the city. It also involved sitting on the fundraising steering group, with the responsibility of helping to develop the recent fundraising campaign.

The Results

In the first 10 days of the fundraising campaign, The Green Backyard managed to raise £11k! The Green Backyard is now working with Peterborough City Council to develop a business plan, setting out a strong outline for the future of the site. The most recent fundraiser that Jennie took the lead on was a live music event, which managed to raise £860!

Jennie says: “This placement has provided me with a fantastic opportunity to develop my skills in marketing and fundraising, whilst becoming more involved with a charity that I admire. I have had several networking opportunities during the placement, which are invaluable at this stage of my career. Running the consultation has boosted my confidence and will help in any future community engagement roles.”
