South Holland District Council (SHDC) ‘values the environment in which we live and will act responsibly towards its future’; it is the only council in Lincolnshire to provide a weekly recycling scheme for every household. The Environmental Services Team is fundamental in promoting effective recycling and within this team an opportunity for a Change Agent to undertake a targeted educational and engagement project focusing on recycling practices was made possible.
Close communication between Ida, SHDC, and CHANGE AGENTS UK has been crucial in contributing to a successful project. Ida has benefitted from various training workshops and has developed practical skills that will help her build a career in the environmental sector. A focus has been placed on improving the quality of the recycling collected in South Holland by reducing the amount of contaminated material collected. Residents’ knowledge of the recycling scheme has been improved through face-to-face communication as well as visual and written information.
The opportunity has included working closely with a variety of key groups and stake-holders, whilst enhancing Ida’s ability to manage a project to time, budget, and standard.
- The recycling contamination rate in South Holland has decreased beyond the target of 35%.
- A targeted door knocking campaign in Spalding and Sutton Bridge (the areas with highest contamination) has seen detailed discussions carried out with over 500 residents.
- Various informative leaflets have been created and translated into the six main languages of the district.
- SHDC will continue to improve its recycling scheme for residents and create opportunities for people to work on meaningful and rewarding projects within environmental services.
