Sustainability Projects Assistant, Daisy at the University of Essex

The University of Essex has committed to make a 43% cut in its carbon emissions by 2020, against a 2005 baseline. To raise awareness of pro-environmental behaviour among staff and students, I was employed as Sustainability Projects Assistant to manage and coordinate the Green Impact and Student Switch Off engagement programmes.

Focusing on areas including energy consumption, waste and recycling, procurement, the University is helping to inform and educate its community in order to help to reduce its impact.

The Partnership

Change Agents UK has provided excellent support, through training, mentoring, and the opportunity to network with peers in similar roles across the UK

Key Responsibilities

I manage Green Impact from start to finish, from creating the workbooks, providing support to those taking part, and arranging the awards ceremony. I also coordinate on-campus activities for the Student Switch Off energy-saving programme.

Opportunity Benefits

The role has been a fantastic opportunity to develop my networking and stakeholver engagement skills, as well as organising events and being creative in marketing and communications.

The Results

I have been able to continue on the previous success of Green Impact, increasing the number of participating teams to 40. Awareness in sustainability has grown overall, and we are looking to expand to include contractors we use on campus.

We are also developing our own engagement programme for students in accommodation, working more closely with the SU and Resident Assistants to reach more students.

“Daisy is always exploring new opportunities to raise awareness of and engagement in sustainability, and this has made a huge difference”
